AUTUMN CONCERT
|
| Wagner - Overture, The Flying Dutchman | |
| Brahms - Violin Concerto | |
| Brahms- Symphony No 3 |
Conductor Pavel Kotla
Violin Soloist Thomas Gould
This was a classical concert in the grand manner, conducted by the excellent Pavel Kotla with outstanding soloist Thomas Gould.
What better way to start a concert than with Wagner's stirring overture, with dramatic horn calls immediately heralding this stormy and turbulent piece, driving through from strife to ultimate peace
Brahms lyrical and romantic concerto is one of the best loved in the repertoire, with gorgeous melodies and dramatic turbulence. It is also a test of great stamina for violin soloists, with Thomas Gould giving a marvellous performance of this work including the world premier of a new cadenza by composer, Nico Muhly.
CPSO is pleased to complete its Brahms cycle with this both dramatic and
lyrical symphony, launched into action with a first movement of tremendous
momentum which relaxes to a playful counterpoint of cascading woodwind and
strings, finally ending in quiet. Second movement features a wonderful
woodwind chorale with glorious melodies, followed by the Scherzo, not so much a
joke but a sad and wistful slow waltz with dreamy interludes. Finally a
turbulent and energetic last movement of great energy that, quite unexpectedly,
dies to a dreamy and quiet ending. This was a wonderful chance to
experience this not so often performed symphony.
